North EastPegswood Surface MineNear Pegswood Village, Northumberland Site Status: Site in aftercare period Local Authority: Northumberland County Council Approximately 1.4 million tonnes of coal was recovered from the Pegswood site over a period of six years. The site was restored over a two year period due to poor weather in 2004; topsoil restoration was completed in August 2005. The woodland area around the pond has been planted with over seven thousand trees. Stone footpaths and bridal ways have been constructed linking Pegswood to both Phase 1 & 2 Country Parks. In the near future a footpath link will also be created through Howburn Wood joining the existing footpath network to Morpeth. The car park has also been constructed as has the amphitheatre to the North East of the site. Pegswood Phase 1 Country Park continues to remain popular with residents of Pegswood. The woodland areas have established well. The conservation area and wetland is very successful with common sightings of Oyster Catchers, Snipe, Teal, Mallard, Tufted Duck and Grey Partridge. Pegswood Phase 2 Country Park should be open to the public in 2009. The site is to be monitored on a regular basis and works carried out as neccessary to the Community Park.
