North EastShotton Surface MineShotton, near Cramlington, Northumberland Site Status: Site operational Local Authority: Northumberland County Council
Shotton Surface Mine began operations in May 2008 to recover 3.4 million tonnes of coal. The site currently employs 140 people and contributes over £15 million into the regional economy each year. Current planning permission requires the site to be restored by 2016, however we wish to recover an additional 2 million tonnes of coal from within the site, this would require the life of the site to be extended by two years.
