Ferneybeds Surface Mine

Site Status: Scoping report has been submitted
Local Authority: Northumberland County Council

Banks Mining, has identified the Ferneybeds site as a potential area for coal extraction by surface mining methods. The proposed site is located eight miles north west of Ashington and some 300m south of the southern boundary of the village of Widdrington Station.

Investigations to date suggest the site contains an estimated 750,000 tonnes of coal.  The duration of the scheme would be four years green to green

The site benefits from:

• Easy access to the A1068 – negating the need for HGVs to travel through Widdrington Station

• Being a sufficient distance away from Widdrington Station to ensure noise, dust and vibration impacts
can be within Northumberland County Council’s required limits

Benefits associated with the proposals:

• Approximately 40 jobs on site

• A valuable contribution to the north east economy

• Organisations in the area are eligble to apply for grants from The Banks Community Fund

• Minimises the need to import coal

Banks Mining will continue to engage with the local community to seek their views and gather their feedback. This will be achieved through meetings, exhibitions, newsletters, Banks’ website and press releases.

Banks Mining intends to submit a planning application in the latter part of 2010.
