North EastMoor House Wind FarmNorth East of Darlington Site Status: A planning application has been submitted. Local Authority: Darlington Borough Council Click here for a site location plan Key features of the proposed wind farm: We are proposing the construction of up to 10 wind turbines, each with a capacity of around 2 - 2.5 megawatts (MW). This could provide up to 25MW of renewable electricity, or enough for 11,000-14,000 homes. The site would assist in delivering Tees Valleys 2010 renewable energy target of 138MW (currently less than 40MW has been achieved). The electricity will be generated from a renewable energy source with no carbon dioxide emissions. It is estimated that the reduction in CO2 production over the lifetime of the development would be between 0.5 and 1.4 million tonnes of the gas and coal. This calculation is based on advice from the Advertising Standards Agency
Turbine dimensions have been considered to achieve the optimum balance between energy production, visual impact, and impact on the airport. Tip heights of 110 and 100m are proposed.
The wind farm would last for around 25 years, with around 12 months for construction and decommissioning. The grid connection would be to a local substation by overhead cables on wooden poles or by underground cables. There is an opportunity to connect into the large overhead cables that cross the site. If you want to know more about wind farm development the World Wildlife Fund for Nature, Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace have set up an informative and comprehensive web site at http://www.yes2wind.com/. The website http://www.embracewind.com/ also has information about wind farms.
