Windy Bank Wind Farm

Site Status: A scoping report for a wind farm has been submitted. A wind mast has been erected.
Local Authority: Durham County Council
  • We are proposing the construction of between 5 and 9 wind turbines, each with a capacity of around 2 - 3MW.
  • The could provide approximately 18MW of renewable electricity, or enough for up to 11,500 homes.
  • The site would assist in delievering County Durham's 2020 renewable energy targets of 164MW.
  • This electricity will be generated from a renewable energy source with no carbon dioxide emissions.
  • Turbine dimensions are being considered to achieve the optimum balance between energy production and visual impact.  Larger turbines will generally produce more energy each year.
  • The wind farm would last for around 25 years, with around 12 months for construction and decommissioning.
  • The grid connection will be to a local substation by overhead cables on wooden poles or by underground cables.
