North West

Stone Chest, Black Knors and Mossgrove Wind Farms

Site Status: A scoping report for all three sites has been submitted
Local Authority: Carlisle City Council
We are proposing the construction of approximately 40 wind turbine, each with a capacity of around 2 - 3MW:

  • Stone Chest - up to 10 turbines
  • Black Knors - up to 20 turbines
  • Mossgrove - up to 10 turbines

This could provide up to 80 MW of renewable electricity, or enough for up to 40,000 homes.

The site would assist in delivering Cumbria's 2020 renewable energy targets from all renewable technologies of 292.4 MW (of which 247.5 MW is from onshore wind).

This electricity will be generated from a renewable energy source with no carbon dioxide emissions.

Turbine dimensions are being considered to achieve the optimum balance between energy production and visual impact.  The proposed height of the turbines is 125m to tip.

The wind farms would last for around 25 years, with around 12 months for construction and decommissioning.

The grid connection will be to local substations by overhead cables on wooden poles or by underground cables.
